パラオ語に頻繁にでてくる er ・・・ どういう意味で、どういうときに使われるのか、よくわかりません。
会話の中で er を聞き分けるのは、ほぼ至難の業、かもしれません。
Ｌｅｗｉｓ S Josephs によれば、
” the word er must function as a marker or indicator that the object noun is specific. ・・・・・ If er is absent, the object noun is interpreted in general, nonspecific ・・・・” （”Handbook of Palauan Grammar” Lewis S Josephs)
とあります。 例文をみてみましょう。
１． A ngelekek a medakt a derumk.
２． A ngelekek a medakt er a derumk.
１．と２．の違いは、er があるか、ないか、だけです。
で、 英訳すると、
１． My child is afraid of thunder.
２． My child is afraid of the thunder.
むしろ和訳しないほうが、理解しやすいと思います。
er の持つ機能として、後ろの名詞を specific にする。 er がなければ、general な話になる、ということらしいです。
２．の場合、er があることによって、「今、光ったり、鳴ったりしている、このカミナリをこわがっている」と言っているのですね。 １．は一般論として「うちの子は、カミナリが大きらいで・・・」というような情景でしょう。
